The Kentucky race had to be pushed back from its traditional Saturday night slot to Sunday. The race may have started out with somewhat of a lull that day, but finished in historic fashion when Cup Series rookie, Cole Custer took the checkered flag. This was the first time a rookie had ever won a Cup race at Kentucky. The 22 year old, entered the weekend with 25 points, but managed to power his way around veteran drivers Kevin Harvick, Martin Truex Jr. and Ryan Blaney on the final lap with a four-wide pass on the outside. Harvick, who was the series points leader, was a solid favorite, but couldn't manage to capture his fifth win of the season that day.
