Chase Elliot snagged his first NASCAR Cup Series title at Phoenix Raceway. He became the third youngest Cup Series champion in NASCAR history. Elliot managed to top his fellow finalists Denny Hamlin, Brad Keselowski, and Joey Logano. Multiple failures in the pre-race inspection put Elliot at the back of the pack, but he was able to move up to the third position by the end of Stage One of the race. He then moved up to second by the end of Stage Two, and took over in the final stage of the race. He ended up leading a race-high 153 laps, including the final 43 circuits after passing Logano on Lap 270.
