2001 Daytona 500 - Highlights


Bill Elliott was the pole leader in this 2001 Daytona 500 that saw 49 lead changes and an epic finish. Jeff Purvis caused the first caution of the day at lap 47. Then the 'Big One' wreck happened on lap 173 when Tony Stewart got turned sideways against the backside wall. Stewart went airborne, multiple cars caught fire and a grand total of 18 cars where subsequently thinned from the field. 26 cars remained after the red flag and Michael Waltrip pulled out in front with just 17 laps to go and maintained the lead for his first victory in 463 attempts. Dale Earnhardt Jr. came in 2nd.
